A company called 'Recovery Squad' is asking for a 'capital gains tax' fee – is this another scam?
Hey everyone,
I'm in a really tough spot here and honestly, feeling a bit desperate. Last year, I lost a significant amount of money – about R80,000 – to a crypto investment scam. I reported it to the local police here in Joburg, but, well, you know how that goes. Not much happened.
Recently, out of nowhere, I was contacted by a company calling themselves 'Recovery Squad'. They emailed me, saying they'd traced my funds and could help me get them back. They had some details about my original scam that seemed pretty accurate, which got my hopes up. After a few calls, where they sounded very professional, they sent me a document claiming my funds were recovered but were being held by a 'financial institution' due to 'pending tax obligations.' Now they're asking for a 'capital gains tax' payment of around R15,000 before they can release my original money. They want me to pay it into a crypto wallet.
My gut is screaming scam again, but part of me, the desperate part, wants to believe it. Has anyone heard of this 'Recovery Squad'? Is this capital gains tax thing for recovered scam money even real? I just can't afford to lose more.
Thanks in advance for any help.
