Met a 'friend' from a professional networking app, lost everything to a fake crypto platform. What now?
Feeling so stupid right now, honestly. I met this guy, 'Michael', on a professional networking app, you know, the one for connecting with people in your industry. He seemed really legit, talked about his work in finance, how he was doing well. After a few weeks of chatting, he started telling me about this 'exclusive' crypto investment platform he was using, something called ZG.com. He showed me screenshots of his amazing profits, super convincing. I started with a small amount, like $500, and it 'grew' so fast. He was always there, guiding me, being super supportive. I ended up putting in my savings, about low five figures. Then last week, when I tried to withdraw, the platform locked my account. Said I needed to pay a 'tax' or 'unlock fee' of 20% of my total 'gains'. That's when it hit me. I know, I know, I feel like such an idiot. I'm in Ajman, UAE, and I don't even know where to begin. My bank here wasn't helpful. Has anyone dealt with anything like this with ZG.com or a similar situation? Where do I even report this in the UAE or internationally?
Lost my savings to a 'mentor' from a professional networking app, fake crypto app. Should I even bother reporting from UAE?
I really need some advice here. I met someone on a professional networking app, you know, the kind where you connect for career opportunities and stuff. This guy, he seemed super successful, always talking about his investments and how he was mentoring people to financial freedom. He added me to a WhatsApp group with other 'mentees,' and they all seemed to be making crazy money on this crypto platform he recommended – it was called something generic like 'Global Trade Pro.' I started with a small amount, saw some 'returns,' and then invested pretty much everything I had, a low five-figure sum. Now, the platform is gone, the WhatsApp group is deleted, and he's blocked me everywhere. I feel so stupid. I told my family I was investing in a solid startup, not this. I'm based in Sharjah, UAE. Is there any point in reporting this? Will local police even care? I feel so embarrassed. Do I have any options here?
