A company called 'Payback Ltd' wants a 'settlement agreement fee' to get my money back. Is this legit?
Hi everyone, I'm really at my wit's end here. About six months ago, I fell for a crypto investment scam, lost nearly 8k GBP. It was awful, I was so embarrassed. I reported it to my bank (NatWest), Action Fraud, and even the FCA, but didn't really get anywhere. Just felt like I was sending reports into a black hole.
Then, out of the blue last week, I got an email from a company calling themselves 'Payback Ltd'. They said they'd found my case details through 'public records' and could recover my funds. They even knew the exact amount I lost! They've been super professional on the phone, sent me some official-looking documents. They want a 'settlement agreement fee' of about £750 to proceed, saying it's for legal processing with the 'offshore brokers'. They claim once that's paid, the rest of my funds will be released within 7-10 days.
My gut is screaming 'scam' again, especially since they're asking for money upfront. But the idea of getting my money back, even a portion, is so tempting. Has anyone dealt with Payback Ltd? Is this a genuine recovery service, or am I just about to get scammed a second time?
