My savings gone after a fake 'crypto tax refund' phishing attack, can I get it back?
Okay so I feel like such an idiot. I got an email last week, looked really legit, saying there was a crypto tax refund available from the 'Australian Tax Office' for my last year's earnings. It had a link to what looked like a government portal. I clicked it, logged in with my Coinbase details (I know, I know!), and confirmed some stuff. Everything looked totally normal, like a real refund form. Then today, I check my Coinbase account... and it's empty. All my ETH, about 4 grand worth at current prices, is gone. They moved it straight to some random wallet address. I immediately changed my Coinbase password and enabled 2FA (which I *thought* I had on, but apparently not properly). I've reported it to Coinbase support, but they just sent an automated message about not being responsible for phishing. Is there seriously nothing I can do? I'm in Adelaide, this was my rainy day fund. Feeling pretty desperate here.
My savings gone after a fake 'crypto tax refund' phishing attack, can I get it back?
Feeling so stupid right now. I got an email, looked super legitimate, like it was from a major crypto platform (not naming them here, still a bit paranoid). It said I was due a "crypto tax refund" from some new government initiative, and I just needed to verify my wallet. I clicked the link, it looked like the real site, and I entered my seed phrase like a complete idiot. Within literal minutes, my MetaMask wallet was drained. Most of my ETH, some MATIC, all gone. This happened yesterday afternoon, like 3 PM local time. I've already reported it to my bank because I funded the wallet from there, but they just said crypto isn't covered. I'm in Winnipeg, Canada. My partner is furious. Is there *any* chance at all to recover these funds, or have I basically just lost everything from years of saving?
