Crypto funds vanished after 'tech support' helped me access my old wallet, any recourse?
Hi everyone, I'm feeling sick to my stomach about this. About a week ago, I found an old hard drive with a bunch of crypto from like, 2017. I was so excited! But I couldn't remember the password for the wallet software. So I searched online for help, found a 'tech support' number, and they connected to my computer via AnyDesk. The guy was super helpful, spent almost an hour with me, eventually got me logged in. The balance was there, almost 8 ETH. He said I should move it to a 'more secure' wallet and suggested Binance. I went to do it, and as I was trying to send it, the balance just... dropped to zero. He hung up. My stomach dropped. I tried to trace it on Etherscan but I'm no expert, it's just a bunch of numbers to me. I've reported it to the UK police, but they seemed a bit clueless tbh. Is there anything, anything at all, I can do? I'm in Birmingham.
Crypto funds gone after 'customer service' remote access trick, is there any way to recover?
Hey everyone, feeling pretty sick about this. I usually consider myself pretty savvy, but I messed up big time. I got an email, looked super legitimate, purporting to be from Kraken support. Said there was an 'unusual login attempt' on my account and I needed to verify my identity urgently. I clicked the link, it took me to what looked exactly like the Kraken login page. Logged in, and then it asked me to download a 'security patch' that was actually a remote access tool. Before I knew it, someone was moving my BTC and ETH right before my eyes. They cleared out about AUD 15,000 worth of crypto. It happened so fast, like 10 minutes from clicking the link to everything being gone. I've reported it to Kraken, changed all my passwords, and contacted my bank. Is there literally *anything* else I can do? Or is it just gone for good? Really desperate for some advice here.
Lost my crypto after a 'customer support' remote access scam on Coinbase, is it recoverable?
I'm feeling really stupid and heartbroken right now. Yesterday morning, I got a text message, looked *exactly* like Coinbase, saying there was suspicious activity on my account and I needed to verify immediately or it would be locked. I clicked the link, and it took me to a site that also looked exactly like Coinbase. I entered my login details, and then it said I needed to call their support line. I called the number, and the person on the other end, sounded very professional, told me I needed to install TeamViewer so they could 'secure my account.' I was half-asleep, honestly, and just followed instructions. They accessed my computer, moved some crypto from my Coinbase Pro account to another wallet I didn't recognize. About 0.8 ETH and some USDC, like, low five figures USD. My husband is furious. Is there ANY way to get this back? I reported it to Coinbase but they just said they can't reverse crypto transactions.
Lost my crypto after a 'customer support' remote access scam – any hope of getting it back?
Hey everyone, feeling pretty stupid right now. I received an email, looked super legitimate, supposedly from Coinbase support. It said there was suspicious activity on my account and I needed to verify my identity urgently. I clicked the link, it led to a site that looked *exactly* like Coinbase. Then it prompted me to download a 'secure remote access tool' so they could 'investigate'. Like an idiot, I installed it. Within minutes, my whole crypto balance, about 8k USD in ETH and some BTC, was gone from my Coinbase account. I was just watching my screen, helpless. I tried contacting actual Coinbase support but they just gave me the standard 'we can't reverse transactions' spiel. Is there *any* chance of getting this back? Or am i just out of luck for being so gullible?
Lost my crypto after a 'customer support' remote access scam, can it be recovered?
I'm feeling so stupid right now. I got an email, looked super legitimate, saying there was a 'security issue' with my ZG.com account and I needed to verify my identity. I clicked the link, logged in, and then a live chat popped up. The person on the chat said they needed to remote into my computer to fix something — a 'network syncing issue' or something. Genuinely, I thought it was real. They told me to install TeamViewer. I did. They then spent about 20 minutes clicking around, opened my Kraken tab, and asked me to log in there too, saying it was part of the 'verification'. Next thing I know, my BTC and ETH from both ZG.com and Kraken are GONE. Just vanished. This happened yesterday evening. I immediately changed passwords, disconnected TeamViewer, and reported it to Kraken, but they just said 'we'll investigate' which sounds like nothing will happen. Is there any hope at all, or am i just out of luck forever?
